Many Singaporeans cannot do without their daily dose of caffeine, so cheap kopi and teh would be a huge blessing.
Come June 2019, NTUC Foodfare and Kopitiam outlets island-wide will offer more affordable food and drinks.
NTUC leaders revealed the plans on Thursday (25 Apr) in their May Day speech.
From May 2019, NTUC members and senior citizens will be able to purchase kopi and teh at 50 cents a cup at nearly 100 NTUC Foodfare and Kopitiam outlets.
This is equivalent to a nearly 70% discount off the usual price of $1.60 at most Kopitiam outlets.
NTUC members will get the discount for the whole of May 2019, and subsequently on every Wednesday from June 2019 to June 2020.
Singaporeans from the Pioneer and Merdeka generations can also enjoy the offer on every Wednesday from July 2019 to June 2020.
Consumers from these groups are allowed to buy unlimited cups of discounted kopi and teh in a day.
While they can only ask for 1 drink for each time they flash their card at the stall counter, they can choose to re-queue if they want to order more.
In addition to cheaper drinks, more NTUC Foodfare and Kopitiam outlets will be offering relatively cheaper breakfast sets and cai png.
From Saturday (1 Jun), there will be 52 of such outlets, up from the previous 25.
By end-2019, NTUC Foodfare plans to expand Rice Garden, a social outreach initiative providing meals from as low as $1.50, by opening more outlets.
The eventual plan is to have at least 1 outlet in every housing estate for more accessibility.
NTUC’s acquisition of Kopitiam last year may have led many to sound out their worries about Singapore’s hawker scene heading towards a monopoly and possibly raising prices.
However, both NTUC president Mary Liew and secretary-general Ng Chee Meng reassured the public that they will continue to provide affordable and nutritious meals for everyone.
In addition to cheaper meal options, NTUC also announced last month that they’ll cut prices of household essentials.
We’re heartened that NTUC is taking steps to mitigate the rising cost of living, and we hope they’ll continue making daily necessities affordable for all Singaporeans.
