Nurses Working In Moulmien-Cairnhill Constituency Get Priority Queues With “MoCA Cares For Nurses”

Nurses have definitely been having a hard time coping with Covid-19 and unfair treatment. But things are looking up for those who work in the Moulmien-Cairnhill constituency.

This Valentine’s Day, Moulmien-Cairnhill MP Melvin Yong announced an initiative to support nurses working at hospitals in the constituency on his Facebook.

The initiative, “MoCA Cares For Nurses”, includes priority queues and free meals among other benefits, to show nurses support and appreciation for their hard work.

Support for nurses working at hospitals in the vicinity

In his Facebook post, Mr Yong mentioned how Moulmien-Cairnhill constituency is home to 5 hospitals. The hospitals in the area handling Covid-19 related matters are KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Tan Tock Seng Hospital and the National Centre for Infectious Diseases.

Upon hearing about the unfair treatment nurses had been receiving on public transport, he felt the need to start this initiative to show the nurses working in the area support.

Given its convenient location, Pek Kio Market is often frequented by healthcare workers for meals and shopping for necessities.

Over 2 days, Mr Yong and other participants of the initiative came together to start the “MoCA Cares For Nurses” programme.

Priority queues & discounts at Pek Kio Market & Food Centre

Under the initiative, nurses who visit Pek Kio Market and Food Centre in their uniforms will be able to enjoy benefits like shorter queues and discounts.

33 stalls in Pek Kio Food Centre have priority queues for nurses in uniform. This is intended to cut down their waiting time so they can have a proper break before getting back to work.

From now until 31 Mar, nurses are entitled to other benefits as well. Under the Fives Loaves programme, they can redeem a free loaf of bread every week from 2 bakeries next to the market.

2 hair salons around the market are offering a $5 discount on haircuts for nurses, too. Instead of the usual $14, nurses only pay $9.

Pek Kio Merchant’s Association is even sponsoring free lunch sets for nurses during this period.

All merchants who are participating in this initiative will have the “MoCA Cares For Nurses” sign displayed in their store.

It’s wonderful to see an entire constituency working together to support the nurses in the little ways they can.

It’s heartening to see so many small businesses step up to contribute, even if it may be difficult for them to.

Other larger organisations like Grab have also started similar initiatives to help healthcare professionals, so we hope to see even more companies doing their part.

Nurses definitely need all the support they can get during this period, and we need to give it to them. It’s only right that they get ample recognition and thanks for their noble work.
