A hotel off Orchard Road has gained Singapore another accolade: Best Tall Building Worldwide.
Among the features that were praised was its “hotel in nature” concept where a high-rise was turned into a “vertical green space”.
The award was given out by global skyscraper authority the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), it said in a news release on Friday (11 Oct).
Pan Pacific Orchard, which opened along Claymore Road in June 2023, was also named Best Tall Building in the 100m to 199m category.
The 140m-high hotel was feted for its “groundbreaking approach to high-density urbanism, combining nature, community and sustainability within the city’s bustling Orchard district”.
Pan Pacific Orchard breaks from the tradition of a tower-on-podium design, CTBUH said.
Instead, it has four terraced sky gardens with individualised motifs: forest, beach, garden and cloud.
Each provides guests with distinctive amenities and biomimetic landscapes.
The Forest Terrace at ground level features lush foliage and a cascading water plaza.
The Beach Terrace includes a tranquil lagoon surrounded by palms.
The Garden Terrace offers serene walking paths.
The Cloud Terrace is capped with a photovoltaic canopy and can host events with views of the surrounding city.
CTBUH added:
These spaces create a unique connection between guests and nature while mitigating Singapore’s tropical heat through passive design strategies that reduce energy consumption and improve ventilation.
CTBUH also praised Pan Pacific Orchard’s sustainability, pointing out that the large open-air atria reduces the building’s environmental footprint by creating a “semi-outdoor tropical climate” that reduces reliance on mechanical cooling systems.
Its 45% external-to–55% internal surface area ratio also optimises energy efficiency.
As such, Pan Pacific Orchard “stands out as a beacon of Singapore’s environmental vision”.
With terraced gardens and water features integrated, the building achieves a green plot ratio of more than 300%, CTBUH added, stating:
Pan Pacific Orchard honours Singapore’s heritage while pushing the envelope of sustainable urban development in a dense, urban setting.
In fact, CTBUH Chief Executive Officer Javier Quintana de Uña described the hotel as “the best in responsible vertical urbanism today”.
