Donald Trump will lead a nation in need of healing: Tharman

In a Facebook post on Wednesday (6 Nov) night, Mr Tharman said Singapore has had a “deep and enduring relationship” with the US.

Thus, we look forward to “working actively” with Mr Trump and his team “to achieve our mutual interests in an interdependent world”.

He noted that Mr Trump will “lead a nation in need of healing, and a people who must rediscover common purpose, despite their divisions”, adding:

No one can expect this to be achieved easily or quickly. It is an immense task, for government and every level of society.

However, Mr Trump “pledged in his victory speech to work every day and with every breath for every citizen, their families, and their future”, he said, adding that the US “also plays a critical role in a world that aspires for peace for all peoples, and for nations large and small being able to prosper together”.

S’pore & US made great strides in bilateral cooperation during Donald Trump’s previous term: PM Wong

In a congratulatory letter to Mr Trump dated 6 Nov, PM Wong extended his “warmest congratulations” on his election as the 47th US President.

During the billionaire’s previous term as president from 2016 to 2020, Singapore and the US “made great strides in bilateral cooperation”, he noted.

Not only did we affirm our strong defence ties, we also renewed the 1990 Memorandum of Understanding that supports the US’ use of Singapore’s military facilities.

Mr Wong also noted that bilateral trade has almost tripled since the US-Singapore Free Trade Agreement came into effect in 2004 — the US’ only such agreement with an ASEAN country.

Around 6,000 American companies have a base in Singapore, and the Republic is also the third-largest Asian investor in the US, with over 200 companies in around 40 states, with our trade and Singapore investments supporting more than 270,000 good jobs in the US.

Our partnership has also grown to other key areas, Mr Wong said, adding:

There is much more that our two countries can do together, and I look forward to working closely with you to take relations to greater heights.

Donald Trump given overwhelming mandate by Americans: PM Wong

In the 2024 US Presidential Election, Mr Wong said Mr Trump had been given an “overwhelming mandate” by the American people.

They have thus placed their trust in him to lead the country again, and he is “confident” that the US will “continue to grow and exercise its global leadership role” under his stewardship.

Thus, the PM wished him “good health and every success” and looked forward to welcoming him back to Singapore soon.

Vivian Balakrishnan congratulates Trump

In a message on his Facebook account, Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan also congratulated Mr Trump.

He shared a photo of the two during the then US President’s visit to Singapore in 2018.
