Prime Minister Lawrence Wong received an unexpected welcome as he boarded a Scoot flight recently.
The passengers, delighted to see him, greeted him the moment he boarded the plane with enthusiastic cheers and applause.
The heartwarming scene was captured in a clip posted on X by Channel NewsAsia correspondent Leong Wai Kit on Saturday.
In the clip, Mr Wong enters the plane, surprised by the cheers from passengers.
Realising it was for him, he stopped, flashed a big smile and waved to the passengers.
He then took his seat in the front row — an economy class seat.
Later that evening, Mr Wong shared the experience on Facebook, saying he had just returned to Singapore from Laos.
He thanked the passengers for the warm welcome, adding that it “felt like home” once he boarded.
He also posted a clip of the cheering passengers, revealing them to be a group of aunties and uncles.
According to Mr Leong, the Scoot flight was packed with more than 40 Singaporean seniors on a holiday tour to Laos.
Mr Wong, on the other hand, was in Laos to attend the 44th and 45th ASEAN summits and related summits, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
This was his first ASEAN Summit in his capacity as Prime Minister.
Following the summits, Mr Wong made an official visit to Laos, meeting Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone and President Thongloun Sisoulith.
He was accompanied by Minister for Foreign Affairs Vivian Balakrishnan.
