Pope Doesn’t Have Covid-19, But Cancelled Spiritual Retreat Due To Cold

Currently, Italy records the highest number of cases of Covid-19 in Europe, and at the heart of the country’s capital, Rome, lies the Vatican City.

Many speculated that the Pontiff might have caught the raging virus.

These worries can, however, be put to rest, as Pope Francis has reportedly tested negative for Covid-19.

Stricken Pope has coughing fits in front of crowd

The Pope had already lightened his workload since 25 Feb in order to recover from illness.

Then on Sunday (1 Mar), as he addressed a crowd at Saint Peter’s Square from a window, he announced that he was unable to attend a planned six-day spiritual retreat out of the Vatican City due to the cold.

Most alarmingly, during that same appearance, the Pope went into two coughing fits in front of the watching crowd, turning away and covering his mouth with his hands.

This image sparked much concern for the Pope’s health, considering that Italy is one of the Covid-19 hotspots.

Pope undergoes Covid-19 test, comes out negative

Thankfully, according to Italian newspaper Il Messaggero, the Pope was confirmed to be free of the virus on Tuesday (3 Mar).

He undertook the test as a precaution as he was exhibiting symptoms such as cough, fever and sore throat.

Furthermore, the religious leader had previously taken part in evening masses with large crowds, coming into close contact with members of the public at these sessions.

Staff members who come into contact with visitors are receiving face masks and gloves.

Visitors are also reminded to be mindful of their personal hygiene and cover their mouths while sneezing.

Meanwhile, we hope that the Pope will recover swiftly from his cold.
