545 Whampoa Prawn Noodles is looking to hire a cook at their Tekka Food Centre branch. But that’s not all, they’re allegedly offering an attractive monthly gross pay of $2,500 to $3,400.

According to the post, the stall owner, Miss Li Ruifang, is urgently looking to hire a cook.

The job requirement includes working from 5am-2pm on weekdays and most public holidays, with meal breaks in between.

The successful job applicant will not have to work on weekends.

Ms Li is offering a monthly gross pay of between $2,500 and $3,400, which according to her,  is “above market rates”.

The average pay for hawkers in Singapore, according to The New Paper, is $60-$70 a day back in 2015, which amounts to around $1300 in a month with 20 working days.

This means that Ms Li is paying almost twice as much as the ‘market rate’.

Needs to be bilingual in English and Chinese

The ideal candidate will have to be hardworking and able to perform well under pressure in a fast-paced environment.

He or she should preferably have prior cooking experience, particularly with noodles, and be able to say the line “Come and eat my 虾面 (Chinese for prawn noodles)” with a straight face.

In addition, only Singaporeans and Permanent Residents are welcome to apply, as hawkers are allegedly not allowed to hire foreigners under Singapore’s manpower policies.

It would also be a bonus if he or she lives near the food centre in Little India, presumably for convenience of travel.

The stall, 545 Whampoa Prawn Noodles in Tekka Food Centre, has been operating since 2014 and has been passed down to Ms Li from her parents.

As her parents are ageing, she is looking for another worker to join her at the stall as she plans to continue the business for many decades to come.

Multiple applications received

2 hours after the hiring notice was put up, the page shared that they have received “quite a number” of applications.

They also revealed that they’ll be opening another position for a hawker assistant in the next few months.
