Singapore has been suffering unbearable heat and humidity for the past few days. We’ve had to contend with sweaty clothes and mushy hair as the level of humidity made temperatures skyrocket to highs of 33°C.
Fortunately, it seems as if our agony might be coming to an end. The monsoon season has made a comeback with thundery showers across Singapore this morning (20 Jul).
The rainy weather will also likely continue for the rest of the week.
On Wednesday (20 Jul), Singapore saw a significant downpour across the island.
The phenomenon was certainly unusual, especially after so many days of high temperatures in the country. Singaporeans took to social media to record the weather, enjoying the reprieve from the recent heat wave.
The National Water Agency (PUB) had also issued a warning of heavy rain from 7.15am to 8.15am.
While it did take many by surprise, the rain was not unexpected. On 15 Jul, the Meteorological Service of Singapore (MSS) issued an advisory warning of thundery showers in the latter half of July.
The weather, however, would only occur after a brief heat spell in Singapore.
Fortunately, we can expect cooler days ahead till the month ends.
MSS has confirmed that more thundery showers will likely appear for the next fortnight, cooling down the previously sweltering temperatures.
The change in weather is due to a forecast of the monsoon rain band lying close to the Equator. As such, this is expected to bring in more rainfall over the region of Southeast Asia in the area.
On most days, the showers will probably occur in the late morning and afternoon for a short duration. This will, at times, be accompanied by thunder as well.
For a few of these days, the rainfall may also be heavy due to a combination of high temperatures and wind in the vicinity.
In addition, MSS warned that occasional gusty winds might occur alongside the rainfall due to Sumatra squalls in the predawn hours and mornings.
Even with the high amount of rainfall, warm temperatures are still possible. MSS stated that the daily temperature would fall between 24°C and 33°C on most days.
The wet weather may help to ease these temperatures down to between 23°C and 32°C on a few occasions.
Singaporeans can also expect night-time minimum temperature to go up to 28°C, particularly over the East and South.
It’s a relief for this rainfall to occur after so many days of contending with sweaty apparel and stinky body odour.
Hopefully, luck will be on our side and allow temperatures to stay within a relatively cooler range as well.
Make sure to check the weather forecast regularly. Leaving your house with an umbrella at all times wouldn’t hurt either.
And, of course, there’s also the option of curling up at home when possible, which seems ideal given the incoming sweater weather.
