On Tuesday (30 June), South Korean rapper Jung Jun-hyeok, who goes by the stage name Ch1tkey, was reported to have fallen to his death from a building in Seoul during a livestream.
However, it was soon found that the 21-year-old faked his death to promote his new album with the help of his accomplices.
According to KBC News, Jung’s friend said the rapper was doing a livestream on a rooftop, intending to jump to fulfil his promise after gaining 1,400 followers on social media.
However, he slipped and fell to his death while standing on the rooftop railing.
According to a Chosunbiz report, Jung’s friend recounted the incident on social media:
The plan was to pretend to fall and randomly give a gift card to one of the viewers and end [the livestream], but he slipped and fell down. It was a five-story building with a curb in the middle. I thought it was a joke, so I went down, but Ch1tkey didn’t respond. I called 119 and went to the emergency room, where they said he died from cardiac arrest.
Jung’s girlfriend also paid tribute to the rapper on her socials, saying things such as “I believe that you will live freely in the world you dreamed of” and “I love you. And I’m sorry and thank you. I hope you are always happy there”.
Additionally, the rapper’s girlfriend shared a clip of her conversation with Jung’s mother, saying she spoke with the matriarch for about an hour about Jung’s death.
While netizens expressed their sympathies, claims soon emerged that the rumours of Jung’s death were false and were done to promote his new album.
“I know someone who lives in the house across from Ch1tkey’s building. The police came, and someone came out and said that it was to attract attention to promote the album. My girlfriend and I were both there,” one netizen reportedly claimed.
Soon after, Jung posted a video of him on Instagram dancing to his new song with the lyrics “I’m back” and captioning the post “Nice to meet you lol”.
His girlfriend also commented on the post, saying “I’m sorry, bbwing bbwing” and “Today is Easter”.
As a result, netizens were enraged by the stunt, questioning why the rapper thought joking about death was appropriate, reported Chosun Daily.
