A typical lunch almost turned dangerous for a 13-year-old boy who bit into a rusty nail while eating at a food stall in Bedok Interchange Hawker Centre.
Jonathan Lim, the boy’s father, told MS News that the incident occurred on Friday (18 Oct) at around 1pm. The boy had been eating a meal of mixed vegetables and rice when he felt something was amiss. Immediately after, he suddenly coughed up a rusty nail that he nearly swallowed.
Mr Lim described the experience as “shocking” and said it was fortunate his son managed to cough the nail out, especially since he often swallows his food without chewing properly.
After the incident, Mr Lim approached the stall to alert the staff about what happened. In response, the staff refunded the S$4.90 that he paid for his son’s meal and explained that the rusty nail likely came from one of their vegetable suppliers.
“However, we feel the need to bring this issue [to] the management for their attention and necessary action,” he told MS News.
He has since contacted Chang Cheng Holdings, the stall’s parent company, to raise this health concern.
At the time of writing, he is yet to receive a reply from the food service provider.
“This is a serious health and safety concern. What would happen if my son did not manage to cough it out in time?” Mr Lim said, worried about the choking hazard posed by the rusty nail, among other things.
In response to MS News‘ queries, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) said it is investigating the incident.
MS News has contacted Chang Cheng Holdings for more information.
