Winter uniforms are not something typically associated with the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF).
But a recent photo of SAF leaders dressed in sharp winter attire has caught netizens by surprise, with the spiffy look earning praise.
The image, posted by Reddit user u/MilkTeaRamen on r/singapore, has since gone viral, garnering over 1,600 upvotes in just two days.
Originally shared by the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) on Facebook, the photo was taken during SAF’s recent overseas visit to China from 24 to 27 Nov.
The visit featured Chief of Defence Force Vice Admiral (VADM) Aaron Beng and other SAF officers touring the Beijing Garrison, where the city’s winter season necessitated the attire.
In the photo, VADM Beng and other SAF officers are dressed in navy-blue winter coats, featuring “Singapura” embroidered on their epaulettes.
Speaking to MS News, a MINDEF spokesperson confirmed the SAF has a range of attire catering to different occasions and climate.
“The coat is an SAF winter coat which can be worn over formal attires in temperate climates,” the spokesperson said.
The Reddit post quickly gained traction, with netizens expressing their surprise at the rarely seen winter uniforms.
”Never thought we’d have one of those,” said a user.
One described the attire as “slick,” while another remarked it looked like something Hugo Boss might offer.
A netizen also listed other SAF uniforms that the public might not be aware of due to Singapore’s tropical climate, such as the desert camo.
Others joined in on the lighthearted banter, joking about trading their favourite winter wear brands like Gore-Tex for SAF winter coats instead.
