School in Japan organises ‘pregnancy experience’ for students

A middle school in Japan recently held a ‘pregnancy experience’ for students to gain a firsthand perspective on the challenges of raising children.

According to NHK, around 70 students donned 7kg vests simulating the weight and body changes of pregnancy, designed with a padded belly and chest.

Wearing the weighted vests, students took on simple daily tasks such as picking up objects and getting up from a sleeping position, experiencing how basic movements can become difficult.

Many expressed surprise at the effort required for what they once considered easy tasks.

After the simulation, students were divided into groups to care for babies between two to six months old.

They practiced holding, rocking, and feeding the infants under the guidance of their parents, who shared the ups and downs of parenting.

The students listened as parents recounted the daily realities of raising a newborn, describing sleepless nights and the constant care required.

Many students remarked on how heavy the babies felt and how often they cried, acknowledging the patience needed to care for a child.

One of the event organisers told NHK that the activities were meant to foster an appreciation for what their own parents had gone through.

“We hope this experience will also help students think about raising children someday,” she said.

“Raising kids is hard, but if I were in that position, I’d want to do my best,” shared one student after the experience.
