S’pore Swimmers Including Quah Siblings Win SEA Games Gold, Soh Rui Yong 4th In 5,000m Run

Team Singapore Athletes Clinch More Medals In 32nd SEA Games

Since the start of the 32nd Southeast Asian (SEA) games on 5 May, Team Singapore athletes have been flying the flag high in Cambodia.

Just two days ago, Singapore sprinter Shanti Pereira won a SEA Games gold in the women’s 200m final.

Since then, several Singaporean athletes have clinched medals in their respective fields.

Team Singapore swimmers like the Quah siblings and Letitia Sim won gold in their respective events.

Singapore swimmers clinch gold medals in Cambodia

On Tuesday (9 May), Singapore’s Mixed Medley Team won the first Mixed 4x100m Medley Relay event at the games.

According to the Singapore Swimming Association, the team — comprising Quah Ting Wen, Quah Jing Wen, Nicholas Mahabir and Quah Zheng Wen — also set a new national record.

The quartet triumphed over Thailand and the Philippines with a timing of 3:51.72.

Besides the team win, Singaporean swimmers have also excelled in their individual events.

While Letitia Sim won gold in the women’s 100m breaststroke, Singapore swimmer Christie Chue wasn’t far behind — winning a bronze in the same event.

The former set a new SEA Games record with her impressive 1:07.94 timing.

Quah Zheng Wen and Teong Tzen Wei won first and second place respectively in the men’s 100m butterfly.

Meanwhile, the Quah sisters clinched both top spots in the women’s 100m butterfly.

In the women’s 100m backstroke finals, Faith Khoo narrowly missed the gold medal by a mere two seconds.

Outstanding athletes in other fields

Apart from swimming, Team Singapore athletes have also excelled in their respective fields such as athletics.

Runner Soh Rui Yong placed fourth in the 5,000m event at the Morodok Techo National Stadium on Tuesday (May 9) with a timing of 14:48.4.

Channel NewsAsia (CNA) reported that it was his personal best finish in the games at the event.

Meanwhile, fellow runner Goh Chu Ling and high jumper Michelle Sng won bronzes in the women’s 1,500m and high jump respectively.

Silat athletes Nurul Suhaila and Nur Tuhfah Izzah also outshone their competitors in their respective events and weight classes — where both women won the bronze medal.

In gymnastics, Kaeson Lim clinched second place in the Men’s Pommel Horse.

Similarly, Peter Gilchrist won a silver medal in the Men’s English Billiards Singles final.

In diving, Team Singapore athlete Avvir Tham came in third at the Men’s 3m Springboard and won Singapore’s first medal in diving.

Also a first, Nur Sabrina won Singapore’s first boxing medal after earning a bronze in the Women’s 63kg category.

Singapore athletes performing well at SEA Games

As it stands, Team Singapore athletes are winning medals left and right at the 32nd SEA Games. Our medal tally so far stands at 20 gold, 15 silver and 18 bronzes, amounting to a total of 53.

Kudos to the athletes for their hard work and dedication to their sports.
