Ms Chew had thoughts of starting the brand, as washing hands was something that she had to do frequently during her stint as a nurse.

Based on the description on its website, Rough Beauty produces handcrafted soaps and bath products with botanicals from around the world. Its products are centred around the values of simplicity, quality, and sustainability.

Ms Chew’s LinkedIn account states that she was a nurse at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital from 2013 to 2014.

She then pursued a nursing degree with the Singapore Institute of Technology from 2014 to 2016.

In an interview with local florist Far East Flora, Ms Chew said she founded Rough Beauty while schooling in 2014.

By the time she graduated in 2016, Rough Beauty was flourishing to the point where Ms Chew decided to run the business full-time.

That same year, Rough Beauty turned profitable, reports Vulcan Post.

Over the years, both Ms Chew and Rough Beauty have been featured in numerous publications.

Went missing after trying to rescue fellow kayaker

Ms Chew reportedly went missing in waters off Southern Sentosa on Sunday (22 Oct) morning.

CNA reports she was attempting to rescue a male kayaker whose boat had capsized.

Both of them were subsequently swept under the current.

Even though the male kayaker was later rescued by a passing boat, Ms Chew remained missing.

Two days later, SCDF found a body in the waters off Sentosa before establishing Ms Chew’s identity.
