Shanti Pereira breaks 400m national record in Florida

Adding to her growing list of accomplishments, sprint queen Shanti Pereira broke the 400m national record at the Florida Relays on Saturday (30 March).

She clocked 53.67 seconds in the event, besting the previous record of 54.18 seconds set by Dipna Lim-Prasad in the 2017 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

Shanti placed fifth overall in the Florida Relays.

According to Channel News Asia (CNA), Shanti took part in the Florida Relays — an event she rarely participates in — as part of her two-month training stint.

She came in fifth overall, crossing the finish line 2.17s behind Canada’s Kyra Constantine who clinched the top spot.

Winning track record

Breaking the 400m national record is one of the many achievements Shanti has accumulated during her time as a sprinter.

In May 2023, she became the first Singaporean woman to win both the 100m and 200m sprints at the same SEA Games in Phnom Penh.

Her winning streak continued as she clinched double gold at the Asian Athletics Championship in Bangkok in July.

Shanti also matched the qualifying time for entry to the Paris Olympics after clocking in 22.57s during the 200m heats at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest.

She earned Singapore’s first track and field medal at the Asian Games in 49 years after winning silver in the women’s 100m race in Hangzhou.

The sprint queen topped her time off at the Asian Games by clinching gold during the 200m race, earning Singapore’s first Asian Games gold in athletics in nearly 50 years.

Shanti will be returning home for the Singapore Open to compete in the 100m race.
