Unattended Sheng Siong Trolley Hits 2 People On Travelator, Staff Rushes To Stop It

Sheng Siong Trolley Rolls Down Travelator & Hits 2 Customers, Apparently Occured On 25 Feb

When patronising supermarkets, we often see staff using trolleys to arrange or shift products. However, it’s not common to hear of incidents involving these modern-day ‘wagons’.

On Tuesday (19 Apr), a TikToker shared surveillance footage of an unattended trolley rolling down a travelator at a Sheng Siong supermarket before hitting two people from the back.

A female Sheng Siong staff was seen running after the trolley shortly after.

She started pushing the boxes away just as a lady donning a purple dress got on the travelator.

Unbeknownst to the both of them, the trolley was gradually rolling towards the travelator.

Trolley hits two Sheng Siong customers

In another surveillance clip shot from a different angle, the lady in purple was seen standing on the escalator as the trolley approached from behind.

As it barrelled down the right side of the travelator, it brushed against the lady’s right arm and leg, causing her to fall.

The lady stayed down after falling and looked to be in shock over what had just happened.

The female Sheng Siong staff could then be seen running after the trolley, side-stepping the lady.

However, it was too late, the trolley gained speed along the way and hit another customer at the foot of the travelator.

As this happened, another male staff emerged and appeared to bend down to press the emergency stop button of the travelator.

Netizens point out failure to carry out safety precautions

According to the timestamp on the surveillance clips, the incident occurred on 25 Feb 2022 at about 3.50pm.

Watching the video, many netizens speculated that the incident happened at the Sheng Siong outlet along Canberra Street.

As the video went viral, garnering over 900,000 views on TikTok, some questioned why the female staff ignored the lady who fell.

Some defended the staff, saying it was a necessary move to try to get to the trolley before it hit another customer.

However, many netizens also pointed out that placing the trolley near the travelator without locking its wheels was a mistake to begin with. It shows that the supermarket is lacking when it comes to safety precautions.

MS News has reached out to Sheng Siong Supermarket for a statement on the incident and will update this article accordingly when they get back.

Hope Sheng Siong will examine work procedures

Supermarkets are not typically places where we think accidents will occur.

However, the incident also shows the importance of observing workplace safety at all times.

Hopefully, Sheng Siong will take this opportunity to tighten up their work procedures to ensure such incidents will not happen again.
