An online argument erupted when a Singaporean author asserted that Singapore surpasses Malaysia in every aspect.
The exchange began with X user ‘AJAC’, an American tourist, who shared his observations about Malaysia on 8 Dec.
In his post, he lauded Malaysians for their English proficiency, honesty towards tourists, and the country’s safety, food, parks, and healthcare accessibility.
He called the country safe and well-run, with excellent food, parks, and accessible healthcare.
Singaporean author Kit Sun Cheah, however, took a different stance, replying to this post with an argument for his home country.
“Everything Malaysia has, Singapore does better,” he said, citing English standards, parks, food, and a lack of corruption.
He did, however, admit that Malaysia had better prices and family-friendly environments.
Unsurprisingly, Mr Kit’s comment quickly ignited the ire of Malaysian netizens.
Malaysians were quick to challenge his claims, particularly about food.
One user questioned his opinion, noting that Singapore imports durians and chickens from Malaysia.
Another commenter argued that Malaysians in Kuala Lumpur speak better English and Malay than Singaporeans, who are known for speaking Singlish.
They added that UNESCO recognised two Malaysian national parks as World Heritage Sites and brought up former Transport Minister S Iswaran’s recent jail sentence.
Lastly, they claimed Malaysia’s food scene was more superior and diverse.
A more measured response came from a Malaysian who described Singapore as a “highly liveable city” with plenty of public spaces and efficient transport.
However, they felt Singapore lacked enough attractions to keep tourists occupied, remarking: “What’s there to do after 2.5 days?”
Some netizens supported Mr Kit’s sentiment, taking aim at Malaysia’s public transport.
One commenter labelled it “the worst,” calling Singapore the more developed nation with better facilities.
However, ‘AJAC’ countered that he had not used Malaysia’s public transport during his visit.
The debate spilled beyond Malaysia and Singapore, with Southeast Asian netizens offering their takes.
“Indonesia is better, please go and live there,” said one commenter.
