S’pore Passport Now World’s Most Powerful For Visa-Free Travel, Overtaking Japan’s Spot

Singapore Surpasses Japan As Most Powerful Passport In The World

The Singapore passport is officially the most powerful in the world. Allowing visa-free entry to 192 out of 227 countries, it replaced Japan in the top spot this year.

This ranking is according to the Henley Passport Index, which released its latest report on Tuesday (18 July).

Singapore had previously held the title back in 2021.

Singapore passport allows visa-free access to 192 countries, most powerful in 2023

The global mobility ranking Henley Passport Index released its latest numbers on Tuesday (18 July).

This year, the Singapore passport allows holders to enter 192 out of 227 travel destinations without a visa, making clinching the top spot in the index.

Tied for second place are Germany, Italy, and Spain. Their passports allow visa-free entry to 190 places.

Austria, Finland, France, Japan, Luxembourg, South Korea, and Sweden all rank third place in the index. These countries have access to 189 destinations.

This year’s numbers are an upset to Japan’s top ranking in 2022, with Singapore now having access to three more places than Japan.

According to the Henley Passport Index, Singapore’s passport previously surpassed all other countries as first place in the ranking in 2021.

Notably, only three Asian countries made it into the top five this year — South Korea, Japan, and Singapore.

Afghanistan at bottom of the list

At the bottom of the list is Afghanistan, ranking 103rd. Holders of the country’s passport can only access 27 countries without a prior visa application.

The passports of Iraq, Syria, and Pakistan directly precede Afghanistan on the list.

Additionally, the global mobility gap between the first and last placings is now wider than ever before, said a press release from Henley Passport Index.

Singapore passport holders are currently able to access 165 more destinations visa-free than Afghanistan.

Henley & Partners, the firm that researches and publishes the index, updates the list quarterly.
