A group of Singaporeans recently travelled to Mt Everest from Singapore driving only their Singapore-registered cars.
The journey was documented by Jeremy See, an avid adventurer who previously drove from London to Singapore with his wife, on his social media pages.
The trip began on 28 Sept and was completed on 20 Oct, driving across Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, and China.
The journey ended in Tibet at an altitude of 8,846 metres, the closest Mr See’s Toyota Land Cruiser can get to the highest point on Earth.
Mr See met up with travel companions in their cars at a McDonald’s on the West Coast early in the morning on 28 Sept, before embarking on their journey from Singapore to China.
Crossing various countries and driving in different terrains, they encountered many challenges, from fender benders to treacherous roads.
In Tibet, one of their cars even skidded off the icy road, but was fortunately recovered without much damage.
Despite the challenging travel, the group also spent some time admiring scenic attractions along the way, which Mr See featured in his short vlogs.
On 20 Oct, the trip ended in Tibet, at an altitude of 8,846m. In a follow-up video, he explained that the group was not able to bring their cars to the Everest base camp as such vehicles were no longer allowed to enter the area.
Leaving their cars, the group then took a bus so they could collectively reach the base camp.
In August 2023, Mr See also went on a 100-day road trip from London to Singapore in their Singapore-registered vehicle with his wife, Sharleen Lim, who unfortunately had to miss out on this trip.
The couple spent around S$110,000 in savings, which included the expense of shipping their car over to London.
They were joined by 11 other cars and couples on the journey that covered 23 countries and concluded on 10 Nov 2023.
When asked why they did this, the couple told MS News, “Road trips to Malaysia & Thailand give no ‘kick’ anymore.”
Following his road trip to Everest, Mr See now plans to tour China for a few months. It’s unknown if the rest of the group in his road trip are accompanying him for the journey.
MS News has reached out to Mr See for further information.
