A student from St Joseph’s Institution (SJI) International has died during a research trip to Maldives.
A statement from the school quoted by Channel NewsAsia (CNA) said the student was on an overseas school research trip.
SJI International Chief Executive Officer Michael Johnston confirmed the passing of one of his students “with deep sadness”.
The school community is mourning the “tragic loss” and providing support to the family, he said, adding:
Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the family during this difficult time.
The school is unable to share further details out of respect for the family’s privacy.
Maldivian news outlet The Edition, however, reported on Friday (8 Nov) that a 15-year-old Singaporean had died in the country.
The teenager, who had come to the Maldives for a whale shark research project, was involved in an accident near Dhigurah.
Dhigurah is an island that is part of the Alif Dhaal Atoll. The island attracts tourists and research teams from around the world as the deep waters on its eastern shore are home to one of the only known populations of whale sharks which inhabit one region all year round, according to the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme.
The Singaporean teenager was diving into the sea on a snorkelling trip when they hit the propeller of a running boat, The Edition reported.
The student was pronounced dead on arrival after being sent to the Dhigurah Health Centre.
The police are investigating the incident further.
In response to queries from MS News, a spokesperson from Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it has been rendering consular assistance and support to the family of the deceased.
It also extended its deepest condolences to the bereaved family.
