HDB Resident Allegedly Has Trouble Sleeping Due To Neighbour’s Noisy Parrot, Lodges Police Report

Man Claims He Has Trouble Sleeping Due To Neighbour’s Parrot’s Squawks

Singaporeans may find themselves losing sleep for a myriad of reasons.

While some of these reasons are internal — like stress and health conditions — they may come from external sources too.

In the case of this man, he’s apparently having difficulties sleeping due to his neighbour’s noisy parrot.

The bird owner, however, claimed that his parrot only squawks once or twice in the morning.

He added that he hasn’t received any complaints from other neighbours.

The affected resident has since lodged a police report over the incident.

HDB resident has difficulty sleeping due to parrot in neighbour’s flat

Speaking to Shin Min Daily News, the affected resident — known as Mr Zhang (transliterated from Chinese) — claimed that his neighbour downstairs has a parrot that squawks throughout the day.

The 50-year-old stays on the 12th floor of an HDB flat with his 86-year-old mother.

Mr Zhang told the Chinese newspaper that the neighbour started keeping parrots about six months ago.

However, Mr Zhang alleged that the neighbour would put the birdcage outside his kitchen window.

This presumably amplified the parrot’s squawks and caused Mr Zhang to feel irritated.

Mr Zhang shared that both he and his mother have health issues and need proper rest. However, the parrot has proven disruptive, preventing both of them from sleeping all day.

“I hear the parrot squawk every morning and this often wakes me up from my sleep, causing me to feel depressed,” said Mr Zhang’s mother.

The mother’s bed is reportedly positioned next to the window, which perhaps added to her frustration.

Other neighbours say they’re not affected by bird noises

Shin Min Daily News also contacted the parrot owner, known as Mr Zeng (transliterated from Chinese).

The 68-year-old said that he lives alone and decided to keep birds as companions.

Mr Zeng acknowledged that the parrot frequently made noises when it moved into the flat.

However, he claimed that the bird has quietened down significantly, apart from the occasional squawk in the morning.

He also shared that officers have visited his unit to follow up on complaints.

In order not to be disturbed any further, he once thought of selling the parrot but couldn’t bring himself to do so in the end.

Shin Min Daily News also contacted other neighbours living around Mr Zeng.

They, however, did not seem bothered by the squawks and said the noises were bearable.

In response to Shin Min Daily News’ queries, the police confirmed that they’ve received complaints about the matter.
