A mother from Kelantan, Malaysia, waded through a flood to take her daughter out of their village to attend her verbal exam for the Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM) on Monday (2 Dec).
According to Sinar Harian, Ms Nor Azira Abdul Halim said she and her 17-year-old daughter Ms Nur Ariana Mohd Rozizi had been trying to get out of their village for two days but faced difficulties due to the flood’s strong current.
Additionally, her family had been stranded for five days as a result of the severe flooding.
Fortunately, after asking for help, they found people who aided them in getting through the flood.
In the end, Ms Ariana and four other SPM candidates managed to wade through the strong currents to reach their exam centre.
Ms Azira said she also went along to ensure that her daughter arrived safely.
Ms Ariana said she had almost lost hope that she would make it to her exam.
“I tried to answer as much as I can because the current situation makes us feel stressed,” she added.
Ms Ariana was not the only SPM candidate affected by the severe floods that recently hit Malaysia.

However, according to Bernama, the Malaysian Ministry of Education (MoE) said the postponement was not necessary as they had “mechanisms” in place to work around the effects of the northeast monsoon.
“The (exam) schedules have been properly arranged by taking into consideration various matters, including the possibility of floods,” said MoE Director-General Azman Adnan.
He added that the exam’s postponement will affect other things such as the students’ admission to universities.
Meanwhile, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said that SPM candidates whose exam centres are affected by the floods can sit for the exam at any other examination centre, reports The Star.
However, the MoE is now considering holding the SPM exam outside monsoon seasons, after a truck sent to relocate SPM candidates in Rantau Panjang, Kelantan overturned on 1 Dec.
At the same time, District Education Offices (PPDs) in flood-hit areas have since been tasked to decide whether the exam should push through in their locations.
