A stray cat named “Baby” from Malaysia has claimed the world championship at the International Cat Show in Oslo, Norway.
On Sunday (3 Nov), nine-year-old Baby participated in the show organised by the Fédération Internationale Féline (FIFe), where her affectionate nature and calm demeanour won the judges’ hearts.
That said, this isn’t Baby’s first appearance at the international competition. She also competed in the 2017 show in Amsterdam and made it to the finals, as reported by Malay Mail.
Rooaida Mohd Darus, one of Baby’s owners, shared the proud news on her Facebook page.
“Miracles happen!” she exclaimed.
Speaking to Berita Harian, Ms Rooaida said that Baby was a stray before they took her in. She was also gradually trained.
“Baby was exposed to and trained from an early age to interact with the public, including participating in various local cat shows,” she said.
This early exposure helped foster Baby’s affectionate and tame personality.
Ms Rooaida remarked that the judges were drawn to Baby’s uniqueness and her beautiful fur.
Baby’s meticulous grooming, done by Ms Rooaida’s husband Shaharudin Shuib, was also a key factor in her win.
“This is the best recognition Baby has received because she had to compete against 1,500 other cats in the show,” said Ms Rooaida.
Baby’s participation in the international competition was part of Kelab Kucing Malaysia’s (KKM) initiative.
In addition to Baby, Malaysia sent eight other cats to represent the country, including four British Shorthairs, three rescued strays, and a Bengal.
The International Cat Show, one of the largest in the world, attracts over a thousand feline participants each year, all competing for the prestigious World Winner title. However, only 34 cats will earn the title in various categories.
A video by Facebook user Bill Hussain shows judges holding and assessing Baby, a calico cat, and another white British Longhair cat on stands before announcing Baby as the champion.
