Many students were injured in a car crash outside a primary school in Changde, Hunan province in China on Tuesday (19 Nov) morning.
Online footage shows dozens of children running in panic from the collision site after the accident, while another clip shows multiple people, including a young child, lying on the ground.
One video shows a man being beaten with sticks by passersby while he lay on the ground next to an SUV.
The accident reportedly happened outside Yong’an Primary School at around 7.50am.
At least 8 people sustained injuries, including children and parents, and were subsequently transported to a hospital, reported Channel NewsAsia (CNA). None of their injuries were life-threatening.
The specific casualties are being investigated.
According to reports, a 39-year-old man believed to be the driver had been apprehended by the police.
Moreover, an official familiar with the matter told the media that the driver was not a parent of a student from the school.
He further said a security guard was also hit by the car.
It remains unclear whether the crash was intentional.
According to CNA, videos of the incident have led to a viral discussion on social media, gathering over 95 million views on the Weibo platform.
Many netizens were distressed over another tragic accident involving children.
One asked how such an incident could occur again.
Another user lamented how so many people have been taking their revenge on society recently.
Another comment said these incidents often trigger a copycat effect, as it only takes one major event for others to emulate.
This year, China has experienced a series of mass casualty incidents, which some experts attribute to rising frustration and despair over the country’s weakening economy and the growing divide in society.
