Tampines coffee shop criticised for thin slices of butter on toast, alleged mistake by new employee

Tampines coffee shop serves thin butter on toast, criticised by customer

A customer at a Tampines coffee shop was left unhappy with the butter on their toast.

The Instagram post on @sgfollowsall detailed the incident on 20 Oct. The customer had ordered Singapore’s classic coffee shop toast. Together with two drinks, one kopi o kosong and one milo kosong, the breakfast reportedly amounted to S$4.70.

The customer requested no kaya on their toast and expected either butter or margarine to be spread across the bread.

However, they were surprised to find that the toast they received only had thin stick-like slices of butter which they found unsatisfactory.

“Definitely, shrinkflation had seriously set in Singapore,” the customer said, even urging others to boycott such places.

The photos amused many netizens, who cracked jokes about the situation.

“This is really too much sia,” one of them wrote.

“You mean too little,” a commenter replied.

Another compared the butter to french fries instead.

Incident allegedly caused by inexperienced staff

Shin Min Daily News reported that an interviewed employee at the coffee shop was aware of the incident.

He attributed the issue to a new colleague who had been working there for less than a month and made a mistake due to inexperience.

They agreed the butter given in the photo was inadequate.

When Shin Min ordered the same toast without kaya, it came with four thicker pieces of butter instead of a single thin one, costing S$1.80.

A customer at the coffee shop said that they usually got more butter when ordering and suggested that the employee may have been busy and made a mistake in the moment.
