Tan Chuan Jin Responds To The “Pro-Rape” Advocate Issue; Encourages Public To Stand Up To Misogynists

Controversial pick-up artist Roosh V not welcomed in Singapore

Minister for Social and Family Development Tan Chuan-Jin made a clear stand on Facebook against the controversial and self-proclaimed pick-up artist Roosh V, who is from the United States.

Minister Tan said:

Never heard of the guy (Mr Valizadeh) but having read up on him, I think we’d just have to stand up to misogynists like him and others who will come in various forms. He is the more obvious kind and it’s easy for us to respond with disgust.

Minister Tan added:

We should not just say no, but to affirm our own values by making a stand when we encounter bigotry, and to actively inculcate them in our children.

Netizens welcomed Minister Tan’s views.

Many online applauded the minister’s stand against the controversial pick-up artist. The sharp response comes after Roosh V –whose real name is Daryush Valizadeh — had planned a series of meetings worldwide, including Singapore.

Roosh is known as a  “neo-masculinist”, someone who advocates that “men should be masculine and women should be feminine”. Roosh believes that “a woman’s value significantly depends on her fertility and beauty”.

The meetings received backlash not just from Minister Tan Chuan-Jin, but the whole world. Thousands signed petitions to keep Roosh away from their borders. In Singapore, 18-year-old Ryan Lim started an online petition against him, which gathered over 100 signatures. Counter protests were organised globally. Minister Tan said that the police in Singapore were handling the matter.

Part of the controversy stemmed from what Roosh, an author of 15 books and a website wrote online on February 2015. To prevent rape, he promoted making rape legal on private property, together with other controversial statements. Although Roosh has since claimed that the post was satirical, many are sceptical.

Meeting cancelled

On Friday, he cancelled the meetings saying that he “can no longer guarantee the safety or privacy of the men who want to attend”. He posted a posted a brief statement online, apologising to his “supporters” whom he said were “let down by my decision”, but said he “could not stop men meeting in private groups”.

Others wondered if it was all a big publicity stunt.

But as one user puts it, “Syphilis is also as viral.”

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
