Devotees dressed as Taoist deities stroll along S’pore street at night, spooks netizens

Devotees dress up as Taoist hell deities & parade along roads in Bukit Merah

At night, even the slightest unusual sound can be terrifying, let alone nine individuals dressed up as Taoist deities with scary costumes.

Lee Chee Tong, a Taoist priest in Singapore, recently filmed a procession featuring these costumes, which took place in Bukit Merah last Saturday (23 Nov).

In his 23-second video, devotees were seen walking along a street in relative darkness.

The clip was accompanied by a caption that read “Imagine seeing this in the middle of the night!” as well as a shocked emoji.

The 25-year-old explained that the costumes were meant to portray “hell deities” associated with “giving judgements” and blessings”.

Lee also shared that the individuals were participating in a ‘Yew Keng’ (游境) procession, which involves devotees touring a neighbourhood for blessings.

“It is believed that when one dons the costume and goes through a 开光 (consecrate in Mandarin) ritual, the person becomes the God himself,” Lee shared.

Lee added that these processions occur frequently, but not on a scale as big as the one featured in his TikTok video.

Can be a scary sight

Lee’s TikTok video has since gone viral, amassing over 300,000 views at the time of writing.

The video piqued many netizens’ interest. Despite the procession happening from time to time, many TikTok users claimed it was the first time they had seen such a procession.

Others said that found the costumes scary even though they were familiar with the procession.
