A 17-second TikTok video showing a toddler in Indonesia crying while eating chilli paste has sparked backlash online.
Uploaded by user @ubdb23official on 1 Sept, the clip shows the young child seated on the floor with a plate of fruit.
He dips a piece of fruit into what appears to be spicy chilli paste before eating it, tears streaming down his face as he struggles with the intense heat.
Instead of stopping the child, a voice off-camera can be heard laughing at the sight of his distress, a reaction that drew further criticism.
The video, which has garnered more than 5.7 million views, saw netizens slamming the parents’ negligence.
Several pointed out that a child this young should avoid spicy foods due to their developing digestive systems.
One commenter cautioned that young children’s organs are very sensitive, which could lead to lasting stomach issues.
Others commented on the importance of educating parents, particularly mothers, on suitable dietary choices for young children.
However, some defended the approach, noting that young children are naturally curious.
One mother mentioned that she would let her children try certain foods just once, as that would satisfy their curiosity and prevent them from wanting it again.
