Toy manufacturer Mattel, best known for its Barbie dolls, apologised after misprinting a porn website on the packaging of its new ‘Wicked’ dolls.
Instead of wickedmovie.com, which leads to the website of the award-winning musical’s film adaptation, the boxes were mistakenly printed with wicked.com.
“Mattel was made aware of a misprint on the packaging of the Mattel Wicked collection dolls, primarily sold in the US, which intended to direct consumers to the official WickedMovie.com landing page,” Mattel told CNN.
“We deeply regret this unfortunate error and are taking immediate action to remedy this. Parents are advised that the misprinted, incorrect website is not appropriate for children,” it added.
Mattel also advised those who have bought the dolls to discard the product packaging or obscure the link.
A report by CNBC on Monday said that the Wicked dolls are no longer available on the Amazon, Target, and Walmart websites.
Meanwhile, USA Today reported that the dolls are to be pulled from shelves in the US.
However, the ‘Wicked’ dolls with the misprinted boxes are now coveted items on eBay, being bid for as high as $204.49 (S$273.96) apiece.
Since the blunder was discovered last week, the porn site’s search activity has reportedly reached its highest since mid-2012, according to the website analytics tool Google Trends.
However, the official website of the film starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo has also seen a similar surge in searches.
Wicked Part 2, the last of the two-part film that serves as a prequel to the story ‘The Wizard of Oz’, premiers 21 Nov.
Part 1 was released earlier this month on 3 Nov.
