Wild rhino charges at locals in Nepal, chases man down street

Man chased by wild rhino in Nepal street

On Tuesday (12 Nov), a fully-grown wild rhinoceros was seen ferociously chasing a man down a street in Nepal. Footage of the incident, recorded by a nearby onlooker, has since gone viral, with over 182 million views.

In the video, the wild rhino was seen emerging from the paddy fields before steadily approaching a motorcyclist.

Alarmed by the sight, the motorcyclist swiftly dismounted his bike and ran for his life.

The 2.5-tonne beast followed suit, charging after the man with its sharp horn leading the way.

After a heart-thumping five seconds, the rhino conceded and stopped in its tracks — allowing the motorcyclist to escape the attack unscathed.

It then turned its body in the opposite direction and made its way down the street.

The sight of the rhino frightened the locals who were seen running away and watching the beast with panic-stricken expressions.

No one was injured in rampage

According to newsflare, the incident took place at Bharatpur, a city in south-central Nepal.

Despite the near-miss, the onlooker who captured the video, Mr Krishna Sigdel, confirmed that neither the motorcyclist nor the other residents nearby were harmed by the wild rhino.

Mr Krishna also shared that the rhino eventually wandered back into the paddy fields after calming down.

“We have a lot of rhinos but it’s rare to see them attack anyone,” Krishna said. “If [an attack] happens, we have to just run away. Nobody is allowed to shoot them anymore.”

Increase in population of rhinos poses risk to human life in Nepal

In recent years, Nepal has seen a rise in the population of the one-horned Indian rhinoceros. This is attributed to a ban on poaching and conservation efforts.

However, the rise in its population has not been ideal — locals have complained about damaged crops caused by rhinos as they walk into agricultural land.

Additionally, there have been reports of human injuries and even fatalities caused by rhinos.

Recently, a 65-year-old man died in a rhino attack in Nawalpur on 5 Nov, reports The Kathmandu Post.
