Woman Uses Director’s Credit Card To Pay Off Bills & Shop Online

Feeling underappreciated as a worker, a woman used her director’s credit card to shop online on platforms such as Lazada.

She also used the card to pay off her own credit card bills.

Pleading guilty to two charges of cheating and criminal breach of trust, she has received a jail sentence of 15 months.

She has also been ordered to pay the victim S$23,767 in compensation after already making restitution of S$22,000.

Woman worked for director as admin assistant

Channel NewsAsia (CNA) reports that in 2014, Jocelyn Lee Sock Hui started working as an administrative assistant at Hai-Ou Co.

She helped Hai-Ou director, 78-year-old Lee Kin Choi, with his paperwork. She would also assist with purchasing orders, quotations, and invoices.

Mr Lee gave Ms Lee his credit card and online banking information to allow her to make payments and help with printing bank statements.

As he wasn’t tech-savvy, he trusted her with such matters.

Woman uses director’s credit card to shop online

At some point before March 2020, Ms Lee grew resentful towards her boss, feeling “underappreciated” as an employee.

This was when she used Mr Lee’s credit card details to shop online on platforms such as Lazada and Shopee.

In addition, she accessed his bank account to pay the credit card bills she had racked up using his card between March and July 2020. She also used it to pay off her own credit card bills.

According to CNA, Ms Lee used the card to purchase items on Shopee on 77 occasions from 5 Mar 2020 to 5 Aug 2020, spending S$29,246.45.

She also covered up the unauthorised transactions with paper, committing forgery, and made photocopies of the consolidated bank statements before giving them to Mr Lee to avoid detection.

Ordered to pay S$23,767 in compensation

On 24 Aug 2020, Mr Lee’s daughter-in-law filed a police report against Ms Lee.

She has since made restitution of S$22,000 to the director, who suffered losses of over S$45,000.

The prosecutor asked for 17 to 20 months’ jail for Ms Lee, noting the abuse of trust, the lengths she took to avoid detection, how long she had committed the crimes for, and the amount of money involved.

Ms Lee will begin her jail term in December and has to pay Mr Lee an additional S$23,767 in compensation by then or face a default of another three weeks in jail.
