Woman in S’pore gets 9 weeks’ jail after reciting gang chants on TikTok to earn virtual gifts

Woman jailed after chanted gang slogans on TikTok for attention & money

On Thursday (24 Oct), a woman was sentenced to nine weeks jail and a S$600 fine for posting TikTok videos of herself reciting gang chants in exchange virtual gifts.

According to The Straits Times, 22-year-old Nur Syafiqa Abdullah chanted gang slogans in at least four videos.

Recorded 4 videos in 3 months

The videos in question traced back to May 2023 — Nur’s first live streaming.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Thaddeus Tan told the court that Nur chanted a gang slogan while streaming from her flat in Sengkang.

Nur performed a similar act the following month during her second live streaming and received virtual gifts amounting to about S$83.

Encouraged by her past success and wanting to attract attention and earn money, Nur recorded a video of herself changing gang slogans outside an eatery in East Coast Park.

In the same month, Nur also recorded another video while she was on the Slingshot Singapore ride at Clarke Quay.

Reported for promoting secret societies on TikTok

In Aug 2023, a man filed a police report, alleging that Nur was advocating for secret societies through her TikTok account.

Four videos were found on her account, each viewed between 270,800 and 499,200 times by 17 Aug 2023, according to ST.

Nur was arrested a week later and released the same day.

However, on 12 Dec, she rode a rented motorcycle belonging to a male companion in Kaki Bukit.

After being stopped by a Traffic Police officer, Nur was found to be driving without a valid driver’s license.

Pleaded guilty to her wrongdoings

On 6 Sept 2024, Nur pleaded guilty to acting as a member of a secret society as well as two traffic violations.

Three other charges were taken into account during sentencing.
