A 57-year-old woman named Chen Wangui (transliteration) was charged in Johor Bahru on Sunday (10 Nov) for the kidnapping of a wealthy businessman.
She is believed to be the wife of the victim.
The news came as a shock to many as the couple had just celebrated their 36th wedding anniversary in August.
Chen would also upload photos with her husband and share details of their family life on Facebook.
The victim, a 59-year-old developer surnamed Lin, was kidnapped in front of his home in JB at 5am on 13 Oct, when he was about to take a taxi to the airport.
An earlier report by Oriental Daily stated that three people wearing black masks hit the victim with wooden sticks and took out a pistol to force him to get into the car.
The kidnappers also left a mobile phone behind to contact the businessman’s wife.
They then demanded a ransom of RM 30 million (S$9 million), but the victim’s relatives and friends only paid RM 20 million (S$6 million).
By noon on the same day, the businessman was safely released and the incident was reported to the police at around 7pm.
According to reports, the police later arrested 14 suspects, including three women.
Among them, ten were local while four were foreign.
Before she was charged, Chen was detained twice by the police to assist in the investigation.
Despite the police refusing to provide details on the case, it was widely rumoured that one of the main suspects was the victim’s wife.
If found guilty, Chen will face up to 40 years in prison and may receive caning.
