A 68-year-old woman was injured when an advertising board fell onto her at a FairPrice supermarket in Woodlands.
According to Shin Min Daily News, the incident occurred at 888 Plaza on 25 Nov, around 7pm.
41-year-old Mr Ye was shopping with his family when a Tiger Beer advertising board fell from above a shelf, striking his elderly mother on her back.
Mr Ye believes the sharp edge of the board hit her, tearing her clothing and leaving a scratch on her skin.
Following the incident, the supermarket manager took Mr Ye’s contact details, stating he would report the matter to his superiors.
As the injuries were not severe, the woman opted not to see a doctor and instead used ointment to treat the wound.
Concerned about further strain on her injury, Mr Ye advised her to rest for the next few days.
Two days after the incident, FairPrice reached out to Mr Ye to apologise and offered compensation for his mother’s torn clothing.
However, he declined the offer.
The supermarket contacted him again, initially offering S$80, then increasing the offer to S$100.
Mr Ye rejected it once more, feeling that FairPrice had not shown enough sincerity.
He pointed out that the consequences could have been far more serious if the board had struck his wife’s face or his son’s head.
Shin Min Daily News reported that a FairPrice spokesperson apologised for the incident and confirmed that the board had been replaced to prevent a recurrence.
They also stated that they are continuing to contact Mr Ye and the victim to resolve the matter.
In a statement to MS News, a FairPrice Group spokesperson emphasised that customer safety and wellbeing are always their top priorities.
“We apologise for any inconvenience and harm caused by our faulty signboard,” they added. “Immediately after the incident, our supplier replaced the signboard to prevent a similar accident.”
The spokesperson also mentioned that they have been working with the customer and his mother to resolve the issue amicably.
“We understand the challenges they are facing and are committed to resolving this matter.”
