Xiaomi wireless charger explodes while charging inside living room in China

A woman in Guangdong Province, China, recently experienced a frightening incident when her Xiaomi wireless charger exploded while in use at home, sparking questions over the safety of the device.

Xiaomi, widely known for its simple, affordable and dependable electronic appliances, has become a popular choice on online shopping platforms.

The woman, who stated she had only used the device twice, was taken aback by the incident.

The Chinese brand has confirmed it is investigating the matter.

Xiaomi charger explodes in the middle of the night

According to Chinese news site Dute News, the incident happened at about 2am last Sunday (20 Oct).

Ms Wu (surname transliterated from Chinese), the charger’s owner, said she had been charging the stand in her living room for about two hours when a loud noise prompted her to investigate.

Photos shared with Dute News reveal extensive damage to Ms Wu’s living room, with charred debris scattered all over her cabinet.

Recounting the incident, Ms Wu remarked that she was lucky to be awake at the time and could immediately respond with “emergency measures” upon hearing the explosion.

Ms Wu also told Dute News that she had bought the wireless charger from Xiaomi’s official store on JD.com — a popular e-commerce platform in China.

Despite owning the device for about 1.5 years, Ms Wu claimed she only used the power bank twice over the past six months.

 

Xiaomi investigating incident

Following the incident, Ms Wu contacted Xiaomi, who has since taken in the damaged charger for testing to determine the cause of the explosion.

As of last Wednesday (23 Oct), the power bank is still undergoing testing.

A Xiaomi Home staff member also told Dute News that they would first have to determine the cause of the incident before considering any compensation.
