Even during the ‘Circuit Breaker‘ when many are working or studying from home, some of our roads are still pretty busy and remain a hazardous place for young kids.
On Sunday (17 May), a video was shared on Facebook showing a young kid riding his scooter in the middle of a road in Yishun.
Thankfully, a cyclist came to his rescue by swiftly pulling him aside, preventing a potential traffic accident.
The clip, uploaded on the Singapore Roads safety/Roads safety.SG Facebook group can be found here.
According to the timestamp at the bottom right corner of the video, the incident happened at around 5.41pm last Friday (15 May).
Nothing seems amiss at the start of the video as the car travels on the right-most lane along Yishun Ave 8, in the dashcam footage.
However, as we approach the 10-second mark, a small shadow can be seen travelling on the left-most lane.
As the car gets closer, it becomes clear that the shadow belongs to a young kid wearing yellow riding a scooter. The young rider also appears to be veering to the right side of the road.
An adult cyclist travelling next to the kid noticed what was happening and swiftly grabs the young child by the arm.
A silver van travelling on the second lane nearly hits the pair, but skillfully changed lane and avoided them in time.
Cars travelling on the road slowed down and the cyclist managed to pull both and kid and the scooter off the road using just 1 hand.
Based on the comments on the video, it is unclear if the cyclist knew the child prior to the incident.
However, most netizens agreed that it was unsafe to allow any child to be out on an open road, no matter the circumstances.
Riding a scooter on the road isn’t just dangerous, but is illegal too.
According to the Land Transport Authority, only bicycles and their power-assisted counterparts are allowed on roads.
Non-motorised personal mobility device (PMD) such as kick scooters are allowed on footpaths, but must adhere to the 10km/hour speed limit.
With the incident, it’s important to takeaway how it’s imperative to always keep an eye on our children — especially if they’re near open roads with moving vehicles.
We’re relieved that no one was hurt in this case, but it would be best to ensure that similar incidents won’t occur in the future.
Let us know your thoughts on the incident, and how you think we can help ensure our children stay vigilant when they’re out and about.
