We are now in the midst of the durian season, but not everyone can enjoy the king of fruits.
The less fortunate in our society, such as the elderly, may be unable to purchase them due to the price tag attached.
As such, a stall owner in Yishun recently decided to offer the fruits for free to senior citizens in his community.
His promotion was successful, with elderly individuals lining up around the block to get a taste.
Located near Block 848 Yishun Street 81, a stall named Famous Durian ran a deal, offering two free durians to senior citizens.
The promotion started on Monday (12 June) and will last till Thursday (15 June).
On each of these days, the owner of the stall, Yan, will begin distributing the durians from 8pm onwards.
Yan has posted further details to the stall’s official account as well.
Speaking to 8world News, Yan shared that he has been selling durians in Singapore for the past 15 years, and his stall in Yishun is now four years old.
In the past couple of years, business has been steady, so he had a desire to give back to society and help the elderly. With the current economic situation being unstable, many could not afford durians.
As a result, Yan chose to run the promotion for them, with this being the second year he has done so despite the comparatively higher prices of durians.
He will be giving out 550kg of durian every night, which is equivalent to about 800 pieces. The varieties on offer include red prawn and D13, with the average price ranging from S$5 to S$10.
Each senior citizen will be able to receive two to three durians, amounting to about S$20.
Yan’s offer was a success, according to 8world News. At least 30 to 40 senior citizens queued up for the free durians.
Speaking to the media outlet, a 62-year-old customer explained that with prices on a rise, even three meals a day was difficult for him.
As such, he expressed his gratitude to Yan for the offer.
Meanwhile, an 87-year-old woman said she saw the long queue but hesitated to join it. Yan, noticing her apprehension, immediately offered the durians to her.
“I really want to eat durian, but it is very expensive, so I haven’t tasted durian for many years,” she said.
Three to four employees were also ready at the stall to cut up the durians for the elderly. In addition, Yan said he had friends who were willing to help him with the distribution.
“A wholesaler sponsored me 100kg of durian a day, and another long-term customer also sponsored 50kg a day. I am very grateful to them,” he shared.
Yan added that he felt satisfied and joyful when he saw the elderly receive their durians.
Separate posts on his stall’s Facebook page indicated that folks age 55 years old and above, or 60 years old and above, can collect the free durians. Those who are curious may approach the stall for confirmation.
