We are in Day 5 of ‘Circuit Breaker’ and yet, there are many who are having a hard time practising social distancing.
Our country’s leaders are understandably frustrated. So much so that PM Lee had to give a stern warning 2 days ago, that these strict measures may be prolonged.
There’ll be no second chances now. Environment and Water Resources Minister Masagos Zulkifli said first-time offenders will be issued a $300 fine instead of written warnings.
Repeat offenders, on the other hand, will be subjected to higher fines or worse, prosecution in court.
If you haven’t been taking ‘Circuit Breaker’ as seriously as you should, now’s the time to do so.
Minister Masagos highlighted in a Facebook post on Saturday (11 Apr) that there are still too many people who aren’t adhering to ‘Circuit Breaker’ measures.
We issued more than 3,000 stern warnings today, and more fines! Stiffer penalties are clearly needed.
Which is why, from Sunday (11 Apr) onwards, there’ll no longer be written warnings. Instead, what you’ll be getting from enforcement officers – if you’re a first-time offender – is a $300 fine.
For “egregious cases”, offenders could even be taken to court.
Minister Masagos also appealed to Singaporeans only to send photos of people who aren’t staying at home, or not following safe distancing measures, if they took it themselves.
Please don’t send photos that you did not take yourselves as some of these cause our officers to waste time pursuing past events.
We know that these photos are shared everywhere on social media, but you heard the man. Don’t send it unless you personally snapped them.
Singaporeans on the frontlines are working hard to protect Singapore. It’s such a shame that there are those who can’t follow a simple rule of “please stay at home”.
While these ‘Circuit Breaker’ measures are getting stricter, do remember that it is for everyone’s sake.
Covid-19 has crippled not only global economies, but social lives as well. We’re not alone in this, so just do your part by staying home as much as possible. Even when you’re out to get food, please practise good hygiene and safe distancing.
Hang in there, everyone. As long as we’re united in abiding by these new rules, there’s hope we can tide through tough times together.
