As we enter the 3rd day of the one-month ‘Circuit Breaker’, Singaporeans are apparently still gathering in public spaces.
In response to this, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong issued a strongly-worded statement on Facebook, urging Singaporeans to take the measures seriously.
He also warned that the ‘Circuit Breaker’ might be extended if Singaporeans continue to flout the rules.
Citing another similar Facebook post by Environment Minister Masagos Zulkifli, PM Lee said there remains too many public gatherings in Singapore even on the 3rd day of the ‘Circuit Breaker’.
He warned that should Singaporeans continue to “take liberties” with the measures, the measures may continue beyond the one month.
The virus, as well as the measures needed to keep it under control, will only go away if we “take things seriously”, he emphasised.
As such, PM Lee urged Singaporeans to adhere to the measures and stay at home, especially amid the recent spike in Covid-19 cases.
Just yesterday, a record-breaking 142 new Covid-19 cases were reported.
According to PM Lee, members of the public who flout stay-home measures will be issued a warning by enforcement officers from Thursday (9 Apr).
Enforcement officers previously issued advisories for those caught breaking the safe-distancing guidelines.
In an earlier post on Wednesday (8 Apr), Environment Minister Masagos Zulkifli also urged members of the public to follow safe-distancing measures.
He noted that Singaporeans are still gathering in groups on the 2nd day of the ‘Circuit Breaker’ period.
As such, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that 3,000 advisories were issued yesterday alone by enforcement officers.
He calls the situation “worrying” and urges Singaporeans to take the measures seriously. If citizens continue acting the same way, the $5 billion set out in the Solidarity Budget would be all in vain.
Like PM Lee and Minister Masagos, we hope Singaporeans would adhere to the measures put in place.
If we are only 3 days in and people are already finding it torturous, imagine what it’d be like if it were to be extended by weeks or months.
Nobody wants that to happen. So let’s do this right the first time so all of us can go about our normal lives ASAP.
