We have been told that young people are less likely to die from Covid-19, but how about very young babies? Are they strong enough to fend off the virus?
Apparently, the young ones are not immune to death from the virus. On Thursday (2 Apr), The Straits Times reported that a 6-week-old baby is the latest Covid-19 fatality from Connecticut, United States.
The newborn is one of the youngest deaths reported from the coronavirus outbreak.
Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont, announced the infant’s passing through a series of heartbreaking tweets.
He said the unconscious baby was brought to a hospital, but could not be revived.
The child tested positive for the coronavirus on Wednesday (1 Apr).
Furthermore, Mr Lamont emphasised that people should not go out and should limit contact with others.
While some are less likely to die from the virus, they could put others at risk.
The death of the newborn is alarming, but it’s not the first time that someone very young has died.
MS News had previously reported that a baby of less than one-year-old succumbed to Covid-19 in Illinois last Saturday (28 Mar).
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker told The Hill, an American news website,
Upon hearing it, I admit, I was immediately shaken, and it’s appropriate for any of us to grieve today.
Dr Ngozi Ezike, director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, stated that it was the first US infant death related to Covid-19.
Hence, the health authorities will launch an investigation to find out the circumstances behind the child’s passing.

So far, a study found that most children diagnosed with Covid-19 had mild symptoms, with only 6% seriously ill.
As of Thursday (2 Apr), 12.39pm Singapore time, there are more than 215,300 cases and 5,110 deaths in the US.
According to the University of Minnesota’s Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy, 78% of patients that were sent to an intensive care unit (ICU) had prior health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and chronic lung disease.
To prevent further spread, US President Donald Trump will introduce safe distancing guidelines for the next 6 weeks.
We’re told that the sick and elderly are most vulnerable to the coronavirus. However, we shouldn’t neglect its impact on the young either.
Nonetheless, parents with newborn babies must follow precautionary measures to protect their children from infection.
Not much is known about how the virus will affect infants, so please do your part to ensure that every member of our society remains safe.
Be responsible and practice social distancing. Young people may survive the pandemic, but for others, the virus shows no mercy.
MS News extends its condolences to the family of the deceased.
