Basic Military Training Suspended During Circuit-Breaker Period, But ORD Date Won’t Be Affected

Basic Military Training Suspended From 7 Apr To 4 May, Recruits To Stay Home And Keep Fit

Basic Military Training (BMT) will be suspended from 7 Apr to 4 May, during the period of “circuit-breaker” measures to contain the spread of Covid-19.

This comes in light of the rise in locally transmitted cases, as well as the national closure of all non-essential workplaces and schools during the period.

Around 3,400 recruits will be affected by this, Singapore’s Ministry of Defence (Mindef) announced on Monday (6 Apr).

Recruits told to stay home

During the suspension period, the recruits have been told to stay home and go out only if necessary, like for buying food or groceries — similar to what the rest of the nation should be doing.

The recruits will not be idle, though, said Mindef,

The recruits will be provided with home-based instructional material on basic skills and fitness development.

What’s more, this period will account for part of their full-time national service obligations — thus their Operationally Ready Date will not be affected.

They will also still get NS allowance and medical benefits during this time.

Basic Military Training suspension to have minimal impact on security

In making the decision, the Singapore Armed Forces has considered that suspending BMT would have minimal impact on national security. Thus it would be best for recruits to stay home and complete their BMT after the Covid-19 pandemic has subsided.

Active units will be provide the country with adequate security during this period, Mindef said.

Other SAF schools to continue with training

However, the ministry said servicemen who are required for SAF’s operations — specifically those in Officer Cadet School and Specialist Cadet School — will be continuing with their training.

But they will do so under safe distancing and other measures to ensure the recruits’ safety.

We hope all recruits keep safe and healthy during this suspension period, and refrain from going out unless it is absolutely necessary.
