School Bus Crashes Into Chai Chee Carpark Gantry On 9 May

A 68-year-old school bus driver was arrested for careless driving after he crashed his vehicle into a carpark gantry in Chai Chee, injuring an elderly pedestrian in the process.

Passers-by who witnessed the incident reportedly saw blood flowing from the female pedestrian’s head.

She was later conveyed to the hospital in an unconscious state.

Meanwhile, the bus driver was arrested for careless driving causing grievous hurt.

Bus crashes into Chai Chee carpark gantry allegedly after driver dozed off

According to Shin Min Daily News, the accident occurred at the open-air carpark near Block 36 Chai Chee Avenue on Tuesday (9 May) afternoon.

Pictures of the aftermath show the gantries dictating traffic in and out of the carpark lying on the ground, presumably after the minibus had crashed into them.

The bus also knocked down a 68-year-old pedestrian who happened to be crossing the road at the time.

Speaking to the Chinese newspaper, an eyewitness recalled seeing the elderly woman lying on the ground, with blood flowing from her head.

Following the accident, passers-by were seen crowding around the bus driver, who claimed he fell asleep when the accident occurred.

No students injured in accident

The decals on the minibus suggest that it’s associated with AWWA, a social service agency that provides programmes and services to individuals with special needs.

And that was indeed the case.

An AWWA spokesperson told The Straits Times (ST) that the driver was “an employee of (their) external transport vendor”.

Even though a nearby hawker recalled seeing a few four- to five-year-old kids crying near the scene of the accident, none of them were injured as a result of the accident.

Nonetheless, AWWA assured that they’re monitoring the well-being of those affected and are helping with investigations.

One person, a 68-year-old woman, was conveyed in an unconscious state to Changi General Hospital.

Meanwhile, police arrested the 68-year-old driver for careless driving causing grievous hurt.

Investigations are currently ongoing.
