Social media is a place to take grievances, complaints and pleas for help.
In this case, a Singaporean lady had gone onto Reddit to ask for advice after allegedly being “assaulted, defamed and doxxed” by her neighbour. She had also sough the help of the police, but to no avail.
She, going by the Reddit username u/Immabox, detailed the entire incident from start to present.
It all started with a particularly aggressive stray cat in the block. According to the lady, the stray cat would attack her dog whenever she took it out for walks.
On one occasion, the lady had tried to shield her dog from the cat’s attacks and got herself injured.
She later found out from other residents that she wasn’t the only one who suffered the unprovoked aggression of the cat. Another resident’s son had gotten scratched before too.
Not standing for it any longer, the lady made a report to NParks, requesting that the cat be re-homed.
NParks acknowledged her request and said that they would contact the Cat Welfare Society. But 3 weeks passed, and still, no action had been taken.
During this period, the cat once again attacked the lady’s dog.
One night, as the lady was walking her dog, her neighbour, a middle-aged woman, confronted her about the report she had made 3 weeks earlier.
The neighbour demanded that the lady walk her dog elsewhere. And when the lady tried to walk away from the brewing confrontation, the neighbour starting taking pictures and videos of her while shouting “cat killer”.
After the lady got home, she called the NParks officer, who told her to make a police report if she ever gets harassed again.
The next day, the lady was again confronted by her neighbour.
This time the neighbour started shouting and taking videos of the lady. And when the lady pushed her phone away, causing it to slip out of the neighbour’s hand, the neighbour hit her in the face, breaking the lady’s glasses.
The neighbour also pushed the lady to the ground, causing her to suffer a small abrasion at her elbow.
The neighbour continued to attack the lady, but broke off after a while. She then ran to a group of people nearby and started accusing the lady of being the aggressor.
The lady quickly took the opportunity to return to her home, where she called the police.
When the police did not come down, she headed over to the police station to file a report. An officer there advised her to take the matter to the State Court and “voluntarily causing hurt was non-arrestable”.
A few days after the incident, the lady heard from a friend about a post of her on social media. The post had included photos and videos of her, and even her home address. Along with the information was reportedly an accusation directed at the lady — saying that she had called for the stray cat to be culled.
The post even appealed for donations for the stray cat, which was being temporarily housed at a boarding home.
According to the lady, the videos uploaded had conveniently left out the parts where the neighbour attacked her. Thus making it seem as though the lady was the aggressor, and not her neighbour.
Since coming across the online post, the lady has noticed people on the same floor “stalking/watching” her as she walks home.
She tried contacting the Cat Welfare Society to tell her side of the story, but no one has responded. The police also seems to be powerless in this situation unless the harassment becomes more serious.
The lady has since filed a Magistrate Report and is thinking of getting a lawyer. Not knowing what else to do, she went onto Reddit to ask for advice.
A few Redditors offered suggestions to the seemingly helpless lady.
One suggested that filing a Magistrate Report was right and also added that she should not “engage (her neighbour)”.
Another tackled the issue of doxxing — posting other people’s information online with the intention to shame them. The user suggested getting some body cameras in case she ever gets harassed again. The videos will prove very useful as evidence.
Of course, this is only the lady’s perspective. But seeing as how detailed she went and the number of pictures she gave, it’s hard not to give it any credence at all.
Hopefully, the authorities will step in quickly and resolve the matter. It’s really no fun having false news about you spread like that.
