S’pore Shop ‘Artistically’ Tapes Durian To Wall & Sells It For $163,056, Saying It’s Bondage Art

Singapore Shop Playfully Tapes Mao Shan Wang Durian On The Wall To Copy Famous Banana Wall Art

About 3 days ago (7 Dec), English newspaper Business Times reported that a banana duct-taped to a wall was sold at the Miami art fair for S$163,176 (US$120,000).

Upon learning about this, Singapore durian store 99 Old Trees decided to ‘artistically’ tape their Mao Shan Wang durian onto a wall, thinking that would help increase the durian’s worth.

Hence, on Monday (9 Dec), the durian shop posted on Facebook trying to sell a “Durian Taped to a White Wall” for $163,056.

Durian on wall ‘bondage art’ to remind us of past struggles

For those who know, most art pieces come with a short write up about its artistic direction and this piece of art was no different.

Along with the Facebook post, the shop owner explains that the durian bondage art was to remind us of our forefathers’ past struggles. The owner even said,

The duct tape signifies the oppression from our colonial past.

Very meaningful indeed.

Sold for $163,056, GST absorbed

In addition to the touching message, this durian wall art is created using a 2.15kg Mao Shan Wang durian.

So if you’d like to cop this rare art piece, you can purchase it online for $163,056. 99 Old Tree has also kindly absorbed the GST.

Joke or no? You decide

However, do note that the durian will rot in 3 days and the purchase does not include the white wall.

If you think this is a joke, 99 Old Tree has clarified that they’re “legit selling this”.

So, if you’re genuinely interested, you can send a message to 99 Old Tree here.

Hopefully, nobody comes into the shop unannounced, and casually peels the durian off the wall to eat — like what this Georgian artist did at the Miami art fair.
