As the number of deaths continues to spike in mainland China, France confirmed on Saturday (15 Feb) evening the first Covid-19 death outside of Asia.
The victim, an 80-year-old tourist from Hubei province – the epicentre of the outbreak – had reportedly been hospitalised in Bichat Hospital in Paris since 25 Jan.
He was accompanied by his daughter, who also tested positive for Covid-19, according to Euronews.
To date, 11 cases of Covid-19 have been reported in France, the 2nd most in Europe. Germany has the most confirmed cases on the continent, with 16.
Apart from today’s case, other Covid-19 deaths reported outside mainland China are 1 each in Hong Kong, Japan, and the Philippines.
The tragic and shocking demise of the 80-year-old patient is the first reported death outside of Asia.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to family and friends of the deceased. We hope his daughter will recover in time from the ordeal.
This is a developing story, updates will be made when more information is made known.
