Travel advisory for travellers to Indonesia

Singapore is currently 1 of 8 countries who has released travel advisories for citizens in  Indonesia.

On Wednesday (22 May), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) also issued a consular notice reporting demonstrations in various parts of Jakarta

They are also expecting similar events in other Indonesian cities.

Given the events that transpired in recent days, Singaporeans in Indonesia are advised to avoid areas with mass gatherings and monitor local media for updates.

Riots occurred after the Indonesian presidential election

The advisories came amidst ongoing riots in Jakarta following President Joko Widodo’s successful re-election on Tuesday (21 May), beating his old rival Prabowo Subianto.

According to The Guardian, Mr Subianto’s supporters clashed with riot police shortly after the results.

Mr Subianto’s supporters were reportedly unhappy with the outcome of the election.

At the time of writing, at least 8 people have been killed in the riots, with over 200 individuals hurt.

Stay safe in Indonesia

So if you’re travelling to Indonesia or are currently staying there, do take note of the ‘hot’ areas and avoid them as much as possible.

Most importantly, stay safe at all times.
