After a three-day wake, Dr Lee Wei Ling’s body was cremated on Saturday (12 Oct).
As friends and loved ones bid their final farewells to Dr Lee, her younger brother, Mr Lee Hsien Yang delivered his eulogy via a 10-minute video.
In his eulogy, Mr Lee shared how they played and fought with each other as they grew up.
He went on to pay tribute to Dr Lee’s tenacity and determination to seek justice, no matter the cost:
She carried that spirit of a fighter throughout her life, seeking to right wrongs, with a preparedness to speak truth to power. She was straight as an arrow, and would not mince her words.
Remembering his sister, Mr Lee said she excelled both academically and at sports.
On the academic front, Dr Lee was “outstanding” as she strived to be “recognised and valued” by her parents.
Despite being persuaded against her ambition to be a veterinarian, she went on to top her class in medical school and won numerous prizes.
Besides doing well in her studies, Dr Lee was also a “superb” long-distance runner and has a black belt in karate, said Mr Lee.
Her excellent physical fitness inspired those around her, even influencing Mr Lee and their father, Mr Lee Kuan Yew to “value” their own physical fitness.
Describing his sister as a “brilliant doctor with strong clinical skills”, Mr Lee said he and his wife would often consult her whenever their children faced medical issues.
Even when encountering medical conditions that were outside her speciality, Dr Lee was reportedly “invariably spot on” with her diagnosis.
Dr Lee, however, was not someone who would sugarcoat when delivering diagnoses to her patients.
Yet, she was their “best champion” — something that many of her patients are grateful for.
Outside of work, Dr Lee also enjoyed hiking and contributing to the weekly newspaper column, recalled Mr Lee.
As their parents grew older, Dr Lee also played the role of companion and caregiver — something the younger Lee said he is “eternally grateful” for.
Mr Lee also made brief mention of the Oxley Road saga that erupted following Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s passing and in particular, how Dr Lee had persuaded him to “stand up with her for their (our) father’s wishes”.
Despite not being at his sister’s funeral, the younger Lee shared that he had said his goodbyes in June 2022, before he and his wife left Singapore.
In his absence, it was his second son — Mr Li Huanwu — who has been helping to care for Dr Lee.
Mr Lee ended his eulogy with a heartfelt goodbye to his older sister:
Farewell Ling, You will always be my special big sister.
The late Dr Lee was accompanied by 30 friends, loved ones, and members of the public as her body left Singapore Casket on Saturday (12 Oct) afternoon.
Mr Lee’s sons, Mr Li Huanwu and Mr Li Shaowu, were seen leading the hearse.
