As Italy battles Covid-19, the government is taking drastic steps to contain its spread by placing much of its northern regions under lockdown.
This will affect Lombardy’s more than 10 million population, as well as those in 12 other provinces.
Confirmed cases reached 5,883 on Saturday (7 Mar) and there are 233 deaths – the worst in Europe.
The government announced Saturday (7 Mar) that all schools and universities are to shut down until 3 Apr, while large events have all been suspended.
All have been warned to “absolutely avoid” entering or leaving the affected areas.
These areas include the whole of Lombardy, as well as 12 other provinces.
A map of the outbreak shows that a vast majority of cases are in the northern region.
Channel NewsAsia (CNA) reports that all outdoor entertainment outlets, including museums, cinemas, and pubs, will be shut down.
Large gatherings are also postponed or cancelled.
It is expected that all citizens in affected areas are to stay at home as much as possible, except for “essential work reasons”.
When the Chinese government made the decision to lock down Wuhan and Hubei prefecture in January, it was a similarly drastic measure.
Now, the situation is improving: the region is recording less deaths and cases as Covid-19 spreads worldwide.
As Italy’s toll threatens to exceed 6,000 in the coming days, this drastic step to restrict their northern regions may well help to contain the coronavirus.
However, Singapore has chosen to do the opposite, saying that a lockdown isn’t necessary for us.
Since every country’s situation is unique, they should respond in a way that fits them best, to protect their residents.
