A man in Battambang province, Cambodia has been arrested after hiring two “hitmen” who turned out to be police undercover agents.
37-year-old Rana (name transliterated from Chinese) had plotted the murder of his ex-wife’s brother and sister because they barred him from meeting and reconciling with her.
The couple has reportedly been divorced for many years.
The Deputy Director of the Battambang Provincial Crime Department Office stated that on Sunday (13 Oct) morning, Rana hired two men to commit murder, unaware that they were undercover agents.
According to the plan, the two were to commit murder and also set fire to a house and a car.
The two agents immediately reported his scheme to the provincial police. In a counterplan, the agents arranged a meeting with Rana in Battambang.
Police then caught him red-handed with the evidence, as he was about to hand over the tools for the crime.
The tools, which became court evidence, included four bottles of gasoline, an axe, a sharp knife, two lighters, photos of the intended victims and their house, blueprints of the house, and a motorcycle.
During police interrogation, Rana revealed his murder plan in detail. He shared that he intended to calculate the hitmen’s commission based on factors such as the number of strikes when killing, with 300,000 riels (S$96) per strike.
Setting fire to the house would also earn 300,000 riels while burning the car would pay 600,000 riels (S$193).
He also instructed the two to use an axe to break the car window, light a gasoline bottle, and throw it into the car. Afterwards, they were to use the remaining gasoline bottle to set the house on fire.
Rana planned to flee to the country’s capital, Phnom Penh, once the mission was complete, according to Guang Ming Daily.
The targeted victims informed the police that since his divorce from their sister, he had frequently harassed their family.
Local officials confirmed that he had previously set fire to a vehicle belonging to his ex-wife’s family.
