A Thai police officer received praise for placing two drunk tourists in a pushcart and wheeling them back to their hostel.
According to Metro, 23-year-old German Sina Bauman and her 19-year-old Australian friend Tahli Benson had one too many drinks while visiting bars at Phi Phi Island, Thailand on 29 Nov.
Both ended up being too intoxicated to walk back to their hostel. Other party attendees tried to wake them up but to no avail.
Police officer Saneh Jualaong came across the pair while patrolling the area.
Concerned about their safety, he borrowed a pushcart from a nearby shop, put the pair in it, and wheeled them back to their hostel.
Footage circulating online showed the officer pushing the two drunk tourists along a walkway, accompanied by several shirtless men.
One of the men can be heard making beeping sounds, seemingly to clear the path.
At the end of the clip, the female tourists were safely escorted to their hostels and placed in their respective beds.
” I understand the constant worry that comes with having a daughter. I couldn’t help but think about their parents back home,” said the kind police officer.
Saneh said the pair were intoxicated to the point where they could neither speak nor stand.
Police Colonel Surasak Jaidee, superintendent of Koh Phi Phi Police Station, explained that all routes on the island are for walking, which was why the officer opted for a trolley instead of a car.
He also noted that such incidents have been happening for over two years.
Based on a report on Facebook, this is part of the “You Drink, I Drive” project by Koh Phi Phi Police Station, which helps intoxicated tourists return safely to their accommodations with the help of police officers.
“We understand that they visit the island to have fun and don’t want to punish them. We should be there to help and protect them,” said Colonel Surasak.
